Another distressing dynamic of GM crops are the patents that biotech companies have received. Genetically modified seeds and plants are owned by the biotech companies that created them. Meaning that farmers of these crops are prevented from saving seeds for the next season. In addition, biotech companies accuse farmers of patent infringement when their fields are contaminated by GM crops.

From 1997 to 2010, US owned biotech company Monsanto has filed more than 128 lawsuits against farmers and settled out of court with 700 others. This is one of the most aggressive patent assertion campaigns in history.
