In 1996, GM food crops were introduced as a human engineered cure to the limitations of modern agriculture. Genetic modification alters plant DNA with bacterium to create food crops that poison insects and resist herbicides to increase crop production.

Supporters claim this technology is an extension of conventional breeding but it is not. It manipulates plants to achieve traits that are unnatural for the species.
